Friday Free-For-All

I haven’t been posting much. I’m sure like 90% of the world, these last couple of weeks have been crazy busy. So here is some random thoughts and updates for the day.

w050207a039Seriously Mother Nature, enough with the snow already. The Friday before Christmas we had a big storm, I didn’t even make it into the office. Now today we’ve got another 25 cm. Ugh. At least it’s lighter and fluffier this time, not so hard to shovel, but no way am I doing my driveway. I’ll wait for my landlord to drag it away. My front yard is the size of a postage stamp so it takes about one good shoveling bout to have it four feet high.

Christmas was nice. Quiet for us as usual. I got some nice candles and chocolate and a scarf and soap and a few other things. It’s a small celebration. My daughter is enjoying her new Nikon camera I got her and we’ve played a few rounds of Jeopardy on the PS3. Fun and not easy. My tree though was obviously very dry when we bought it. Nearly every morning I sweep up enough needles to make another tree. I think it will be saying good-bye tomorrow or Saturday. We spent the afternoon Boxing Day with friends which was nice and my daughter made a very delicious lemon cheesecake.

However the stress of the last few weeks seems to have worn me down. I started feeling the tickle in my throat on Christmas Eve and I now sound like I smoke 3 packs of cigarettes a day. My nose won’t stop running and my chest hurts when I cough. Not fun. Of course I’m on vacation until next week which means I’ll be all healthy just in time to head back to the office. Hmmm. Funny how that always seems to work.

I had not written anything in forever. I finally finished my dragon story however. Now submission time. We’ll see what happens. It’s very different so I’m not holding my breath. I just haven’t felt up to writing much. Kind of burned out on anything that requires a brain cell to do it.

Ladybug Reading

I’ve been reading a TON of Christmas stories. I’m kind of over them now. I did go shopping and bought myself some longer novels that are not holiday themed. I may review a few of the ones I really enjoyed. We’ll see how it goes.

I spoke with my parents in Texas on Christmas and then was able to phone the hospital and talk to my grandmother. She had another stroke a couple of weeks ago and will be unable to return to her apartment. Her short-term memory is weak and it’s hard to explain to her that she can’t go home by herself, that she’ll have to go to a home, and my uncles don’t want to be the ones to explain it to her. Although she’s been told, she forgets. She was fine on the phone but whether she would even remember that I called later I’m not sure. It’s hard to see our family member increasingly need help.

That’s about it. I hope everyone is enjoying their winter break (or summer) if you get one. Stay warm or cool and safe as 2013 roars increasingly closer.
